Our fraidy cat Merlin sleeps under a small bureau at the top of the stairs. We see a paw sometimes. When she's being brave, usually when I'm using the computer, she'll sleep on the printer (which has a towel over it to keep the cat hair out).

Kitty William sleeps on a pile of clothes in the utility room.

Most of the other kitties usually sleep in the living room or our bedroom.

Where are your kitties favorite sleeping places?

I used to have a cat who always liked to sleep on my highest point when I was in bed.

If I was on my back, he was on my head.

If I was on my side, he was on my hip.

If I was on my front, he was on my butt.

I always just assumed he was guarding me.

I don't think my two kittens have learned how to sleep yet. :-)

(Not really.)

Usually they can be found asleep in a pile on one of the kitchen chairs when I get home from work.

Piper decided to make her way into a pants leg for a nap. While my leg was still in it. It's only happened once (so far), but boy! was that awkward.

In the recycling basket
On the pile of newspapers on the coffee table
The ironing board

On the clothes I just laid out on the bed to put on
On the (closed) toilet seat
On the seat of my mom's walker

Living room chairs
Probably many more places I'm forgetting and/or they haven't thought of yet!

My two kitties have both regular spots and "places of the week." These include:
Under my computer desk when I'm computing
On any piece of my clothing laying on the bed or floor
On the hood of my Jeep (if I let them into the garage)
On my placemat at the kitchen table ("cat hair is a condiment")
On the newspaper I'm attempting to read while at the table
On the bath mat while I bathe
Several times, after frantic searches, on piles of sheets or towels in the linen closet
On my old CRT monitor until I disappointed them by getting a flat screen

zář 13, 2008, 12:11am (nahoru)Zpráva č. 11: jugglingpaynes

Their daytime spots are usually up:

top of the bookcases
top of the stacked washer/dryer
top of the refrigerator
top of the table
top of the shelves.

In the evening they diversify:

top of dresser
on/under couch
bed
hallway floor
top of chairs.

Love hearing these stories!

Kath - what a bunch of little posers you have. ;)

Flee - that cracks me up..so like a cat hehe.

Charley likes sleeping in warm, soft places - he likes to splay out more often than he sleeps in a ball:

Ginny likes hiding. She'll sleep on any surface, hard or soft, so long as she perceives it as 'safe'. Her latest place to sleep is behind the box we keep our shoes in, which is under the clothes hangers. She has several cardboard boxes too, and in the evening she likes the couch. She falls asleep under things too - another way to hide. I've moved with her around 4 times now, and she hates it. She literally stayed in the bed for 10 days (I counted, I was nervous) and only came out to eat, and use the litter box, then she'd go straight back; all we'd see of her was a little lump under the blankets:

And this one of Gin's two white paws, just because it's adorable:

Severn: Love the pics! Thanks for sharing.

(I'm having difficulty typing this because Moli the moggy has decided he _needs_ necessarily to sit on my lap, preferably entwined by two forearms.
They have us well trained, these beasts ...)

říj 5, 2008, 1:02pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 15: ChelseaBottomley

My cat Snow loves to sleep in my closet right under my shirts. She is a white cat and of course she sheds a lot. I have a lint roller in my room to take off all the white hair.
Koshka will jump into my hamper and sleep in there. His sister Mila sometimes does too. One time I came home and went into my room. I was on my computer (LT!) and Snow was on my floor looking at the hamper but then she jumped on my bed. Later, I was changing so I threw my shorts in the hamper and Koshka flew out! Lol, it was so funny. I couldn't believe he was in there the whole time.
Monet and Picasso love to sleep in laundry baskets with clean clothes in them of course. They started this habit when they were little kittens. We kept them in my parents' room at first and I went in there one day and found them sleeping in my dad's white clothes. I have a pic of them on my phone. :)

říj 13, 2008, 12:48pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 16: Allama

My mother's cat frequently insists that the residents of her household share the true bounty of a shopping trip: plastic bags. She plays in them and, closer to the topic, sleeps in them. Stella/Hey You is not a happy kitty unless she has something to lie in that the humans can pick up for swing time.

říj 13, 2008, 1:26pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 17: retropelocin

I have a swinger too! We have tested the straps on all of my bookbags with my 11lb Quincy. She likes to attack my hands while she's swinging and if the other cat is anywhere near her grasp during a swing she swipes at her too. If I end the session too soon she cries (OK, it sounds more like yells) at me until I start up again.

říj 13, 2008, 4:40pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 18: alison_felstead

One cat sometimes likes to sleep (or sit with his eyes shut at least) halfway up the stairs; a nice vantage point. Reminds me of Kermit's nephew, Robin.
The other cat has a favourite cardboard box in the loft, filled with polystyrene pellets. (If someone can tell me how, I'll post a picture ...)

říj 13, 2008, 5:17pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 19: amysisson

We've had a record 7 on the bed at once, during what passes for the "cold winter" here in Houston, TX. 100% participation! But only for one or two nights per year.

Other than that, at night we usually at least 3 on the bed, 2 cuddled together on a comfy chair, and 2 in assorted spots.

During the day, several sleep on the landing of the stairs, because it has the best view of the open downstairs. But if the sun is shining, they migrate and follow the strip of sunlight that comes in. It's hysterial to see this narrow strip of sunlight with 4 or 5 kitties sleeping nose to tail -- and then having to get up and move every 15 minutes or so as the sun moves!

říj 14, 2008, 9:38pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 20: jugglingpaynes

#19- Did you ever take a picture of them in the sunlight strip? That sounds so funny!

říj 15, 2008, 12:13pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 21: amysisson

^I have, actually, but it's pretty bright sunlight so the photos always look washed out. I'll see if I can find any that are halfway decent, though.

I too have some lovely pictures of our cat on strange places, but I don't know how to place them here, too bad... It's cute to see her in a cardboard box, on her little pillow or on the heating.

pro 5, 2008, 12:58pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 23: AzureMountain

In the laundry hamper when the clothes are warm and have just come out of the dryer.
Under the bed
On the top of the linen closet, behind all the sheets. You can't see them when they are up there. I know they are there because They have to open the bi-fold doors to get in here and I will find it open when I come home.
Under a bookshelf in front of the heating register in the bedroom
On my shoes. One cat naps on my shoes every morning when I put them by the door as I set out clothes for the day.
On top of any piece of clothing left on the bed. But not on the bed if there are no clothes there.
Once I found them in a pig pile in the bathtub. But only once when they were kittens.

Forgot to mention, we have one who sleeps on top of the counter when the dishwasher is running, for the warmth. And when the dishwasher is going and the slow cooker is on, he's in heaven! (Although I try to discourage him from being that close to the slow cooker as it gets really hot.)

pro 9, 2008, 7:15pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 26: Catgwinn

# 25. My "Mr. Bee" also likes the countertop above the dishwasher while it's running. He likes the top of the refrigerator, at the back edge, for the warmth, now that it's colder.

#24. Love the photo. The Siamese cat, Daisy, that I had for 17 years loved to climb to high places when she was younger. Mr. Bee, one of my current grey tabbies, likes the top of one of the bookcases in my living room ( in addition to the top of the fridge). Both Mr Bee & Miss Jessie like the top ot the bookshelf in my bedroom as that puts them in the path of the warm air from heat vent.

>25, amysisson, Our cats have started sleeping on top of the counter when the dishwasher is on too! I've never known them to do this before - one day, they actually were curled up together (an extremely rare event), sharing the warmth. Of course, merely noticing this fact caused them both to get up and move to separate parts of the apartment. They are so paparazzi-adverse.

Our newest kitty, Inara Starbuck, has become mostly a barn kitty, but she must have been tired last night. She came in while I was wrapping Christmas presents in the library, said hi for a minute, then proceeded to fall asleep on the comforter-that-needs-to-be-mended.

This morning when I came in the library to wrap MORE presents, there she was - still sacked out. When I went over to say hi, she looked at me lazily, then got up and went into the kitchen for breakfast.

Hey amysisson - actually I don't care for it as much as my husband and daughter do, although I've watched all the Star Trek, Next Generation, Deep Space 9, (new) BSG, and Babylon Five. I watched about 1/2 of Voyager.

I love Firefly and Serenity. And, I really like BSG. We watch it on DVD and are anxiously awaiting Season 5 (I think it's 5...)

I named her Inara, my daughter added the Starbuck.

I was thinking this morning, about how much I love my girls. Morgan, Rosiebud and Emmaline...They are so sweet and loving and cuddly. They are not bothering the tree too much. Now and then one of them walks by with an ornament, or I find one in the middle of the room. Just right.

Rosie was so cuddled up with me this morning that you could hardly tell where she ended and I began. I didn't want to get up. Right now Morgan in lying on the arm of the couch next to me and Emmie is on on her back behind me, with her white paws in the air....Duncan is observing it all from his spot on the love seat. There is a fire .. I have coffee...

Mine aren't too creative. The older ones, Pumpkin and Belle, sleep on the bed, and Belle always seems to burrow under the covers to the middle of the bed. Pumpkin has been known to relax on the floor vent in the winter time. The third and youngest, Dusty, I have found sleeping behind books on the bookshelf, on top of a paper cutter, and the indoor welcome mat. The odd thing is that when they sleep on the bed, they sleep in age order and in the same relative position.

Anyway, they always keep us entertained with whatever they do. Dusty (4 months) has discovered the Christmas tree.

pro 28, 2008, 6:01pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 35: DanoStone

One of my boys used to like sleeping in the bathroom sink, but there was a drip, and it always dripped right on him. For a while, he would be entertained by it, watching each drop fall onto his fur. But while he tried to sleep there, each drip would startle him! He'd get no sleep at all! I guess that's why he gave up that sleeping place and moved into the bed with me :)

The other (he's always been a bit strange) would attempt (continually) to sleep on a board in the garage that was only 4 inches wide and spanned a ten-foot drop. Invariably, a dog-infested dream would cause him to squirm in his sleep, and he'd fall from the board! Imagine waking up every day from a dream about falling only to find you actually are falling!

I have 12 cats and they like to sleep:

on the bed (today there are a record 9 on the bed)
under the bed
in the bathroom sink
on the kitchen rugs
on the wood floor in the summer
on my lap in the winter (especially if I'm wearing my soft robe)
anywhere the sun is shining
on the window sills in the summer
in the magazine basket
in the cat tree
on my pillow
under the covers
on the backs of the couch or chairs in the living room
under the coffee table
on top of the fridge
and we have two cats that compete to wedge themselves between my husband and I at night, laying their heads on our pillows

I'm sure there is more, but I can't think of them right now.

My little family (me and two teenage sons) has two cats, a "fraidy cat" like the owner of the first poster here, and a beautiful friendly tabby. The tabby (Belle) sleeps anywhere and sometimes stays under covers (wish I had pictures to post). The Fraidy cat (Samantha) hides under my bed much of the time, and sleeps with me at night. She is slowly becoming more comfortable being out in the open and now sleeps on my bed during the day when I am not there. But the minute someone knocks on the door or one of the kids makes a loud noise she's under the bed again.

TweedleDiva, at age 17, is definitely in the "warmth worshipper" camp. Her morning nap venue is the sun strip in the living room (Yes, she, too, follows the warmth as the sun strip moves).

When the sun leaves, she heads for her "magic rug" -- a towel-covered heating pad set on low -- atop my bed. (Safety Note: I work at home all day. The "rug" loses its "magic" when I'm out.)

She is also fond of her "sleeping bag."

As a safe heat source for elderly cats you can buy (or sew if you are so inclined) cloth bags stuffed with rice or buckwheat hulls or several other variations that you microwave. Once it's heated nice and warm tuck it under the blanket or towel you prefer they sleep on. You'll have to pour the cat off if you want them to move before it cools off. My elderly master has a touch of arthritis in his rear legs and has figured it out to the point he'll let me disturb his rest without budging when I take them away to reheat and tuck them around him again. He'll sigh and stretch and nestle into the warmth.

A few questions.....

How does one go about posting a photo in a LT groups thread?

And I assume LT has no rule against doing so, but are there guidelines they like people to follow?

And finally, I didn't see one, but is there a thread for posting cat photos that are about activities other than sleeping? (I don't imagine anyone will scream if I post a non-sleeping cat photo in this thread, but just thought I'd ask! I have one I'm dying to share!)

led 8, 2009, 3:16pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 43: lunacat

question: how long would the cloth bags stay warm for? My mum's four cats, three of which are middle aged/elderly, live in a not very warm room overnight and I've been trying to think of ways for them to stay warmer!!

led 8, 2009, 3:53pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 44: Bestine

#42. How to post photos:
--Upload your photo to one of the big, free photo-sharing sites (I use Photobucket).
--"Resize" your photo to a "medium" size (Photobucket has an "edit" app for this).
--Copy the "http" code for the photo's location and paste it (the code) into your message here. If you want to just post a link, you can do that, too.
--Either way, the photo still actually "lives" at Photobucket, so it isn't a huge "bandwidth sucking black hole" for LT.

If there is a rule against posting photos in a thread, or a preferred protocol for doing so, I haven't found it yet. The above, however, is proper photo-posting etiquette on other huge forums (like Television Without Pity). And, I bet if we are unknowingly perpetrating a faux-pas by doing it, somebody will kindly flag it and set us right! ;-)

Here is my Jean-Luc, who I am convinced is a Cylon. The first time we tried to play our new Battlestar Galactica board game, he jumped on the board, and is clearly trying to push the little Viper into the path of the menacing Cylon Raiders!

I found it! I found it! Here are the LT instructions for posting photos in talk threads (when all else fails, go back and re-read the FAQ section, LOL)!

***********************************

===How do I include photos in a Talk message?===
First, you need to have an account with a photo hosting service such as Flickr or Photobucket. Upload your photos into the service, and edit or resize as needed. Photobucket and Flickr provide html code for the photo, which can be copied to the clipboard and pasted into a Talk message. The photo will appear when the Talk message is saved.

#41: Microwaved ricebags are also fabulous for draping over fried neck/shoulders during/after long sessions on deadline in front of a screen.

led 9, 2009, 10:44pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 47: hlslibrary

For lunacat, It sort of depends a lot of factors. Say you have a medium sized bag. Maybe a pound, and nuke it to almost too hot to hold. Put it on a cushion and under a blanket and the heat will sort of spread out into the surrounding cloth and everything will stay warmer for 3 or 4 hours. If it's smaller, not that warm and directly exposed to the cold room air as little as half an hour.

My 13 yr old cat has some interesting sleeping spots but she can always be found with her buddy, a toy plush basketball that is falling apart. Her favorite places during the winter include...

inside the sleeve of Tom's fleece robe (think sausage in casing)
under my arm or on my hands while on the computer
my mom's lap is like a golden thrown to her
her nest-- she basically stole a teddy bear, a couple socks, and one of my smaller fleece blankets and created a nest that's half under my bed half in the closet that my bed partially covers. She loves it there because its right above the water heater and VERY toasty warm.

In the summer...
any open window
sun strips (not in the winter because wood floors are too cold)
the bathtub
tile floor in the kitchen

around Christmas, she's also a fan of sleeping in the lower branches of the back of the tree which is why we have 30lbs of weights that hold the base of the tree. very glad the tree is all stored away now.

some of her more adorable and less frequented sleeping spots include jumping into the fridge during the summer and darting into the dryer as soon as you open it in the winter... she also loves luggage and tries to pack herself for trips and any open drawer is fair game. She's also been known to climb in one drawer and be found in the drawer below or two drawers above LoL

if I had pics, I'd post. only pick of her sleeping I do have is of her in her "I'm a princess" sleeping pose LoL

My cat Edgar is solid black and so he's decided to sleep on anything black. Maybe he thinks you can't see him, so you can't disturb him. His favorites are my briefcase (he doesn't know I don't use it anymore), my black tennis shoes, and my wrought iron Christmas tree. Catman, aka Kitty William (post #1) has found a new place to sleep - on top of a sweatshirt of my daughter's in a box that holds old newspapers.

He won't sleep in the box if it is not in front of the TV on the rug. If we move it near the fish tank, he boycotts it. I think there are a lot of points associated with sleeping there, because the box has also become the place to sleep for the other boy kitty and our alpha female, so sometimes Catman loses out to Magic or Coco Chanel..

Dear Miss Chievous (sic)

I know your intent, and I love you for your intent.
And that poem is rather good... hey I didn't say great, just almost good.
Not sure how old you are (my cousins daughter is 20+)
Thus I thought I would send you a message from 1750+, YES even I was not born then!

Curled up in the kitchen sink, in suitcases under the beds, and on the third shelf in my closet.

I had a cat that liked to sleep in bed with me.
Invariably, the nails were pointed at me and I ended up lying at the side of the bed.

Another cat used to sleep in the sockets drawer. Unfortunately, that drawer was at the side of my bed about 1 meter above the bed and the cat used to jump out in the middle of the night onto my stomach.

Amanda likes to sleep in the bookcase behind the books. She has a particular fondness for the Zelazny shelf, and for the shelf with my Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine collection. Good taste, that cat.

Thanks, calm! Unfortunately, he is the troublemaker in the house. Tries to boss around the other 3 cats. He already has the humans in the house under his control.

Gorgeous and silly kitty, krazy4katz! That's a great picture.

Last night I was sleeping on the couch in the library so I wouldn't share cold germs with my husband and had three of five cats sleeping with me. It made it hard to turn over!

říj 15, 2009, 7:57pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 71: krazy4katz

Yup! Those cats are real leg warmers! I usually have 2 cats that sleep with me. If my husband comes to bed late, he doesn't get a good spot.

Now that cooler weather has returned, my two cats seek the warmer spots for sleeping:
Mr. Bee likes the back edge of the top of the refrigerator, behind the old canning jars displayed on the refrigerator top (he can peek between the jars to see if anything interesting is happening in the kitchen). Both cats will burrow under the throw that I have draped over a chair in my living room. They also like the middle shelf where I store clean towels in the bathroom (I keep one towel spread on top of the stack to keep cat hair off of the remaining towels). Both cats also sleep on the bed, with me, at night....Miss Jessie uses my covered feet for her pillow...when it's very cold, Mr Bee likes to burrow under the blankets & cuddle by my side, under my arm,

Magic, our 13-year old cream mackerel tabby, has recognized the change of seasons and has started sleeping on the heating vent in the living room again.

This morning I tiredly stumbled into the bathroom to have a shower, and couldn't figure out what was in the sink.. It was my black cat, curled up in the pedestal sink, comfy as can be..

lis 3, 2009, 9:52am (nahoru)Zpráva č. 78: AilurophileDJ

I love this post! Sorry no pics (I know, it sucks...A pic tells the whole story).

Mocha - she prefers to sleep alone, so she has a "pick of the week". Almost exclusively on the 70's couch we have (and it's so comfortable, it's a family room couch, so it's rarely used).

Hobbes - in the Crow's nest of our tiny cat tree (I'm dying to buy a much bigger one, now that I adopted twin kittens recently). Or in the cat bed on our Family room's chair. Mocha and Hobbes tend to alternate places, but Hobbes never sleeps on our green 70's couch.

Keno - on top of our marble coffee table. He knows that Stardust (my dog) is not allowed up there, so he stays there.

Reno - sleeps in the cracks of the couch cushions in the den. She's small, so she just likes to stay in the cracks of the cushions.

Since I got Stardust - Mocha and Hobbes doesn't really want to be near her. I adopted Keno and Reno a couple weeks ago, and they are always in the same room as me. So, if they're sleeping soundly in the den, and I move to get lunch or go in the other room, they follow. When I go back, they come back in the den.

And oh yeah, I live in Vegas...so hence the Vegas "style" names. :-D

Dear Amysisson et al.

I have recently found a stray that is very similar to your Jean-Luc.
Gray/white (although Max has less white) same long body same Big BOOF head,
same tall hind legs.

Up till now I thought he was just a moggie but I keep seeing similar MAX type cats everwhere now I notice. I even saw on in an AD on Aussie TV.
Do you know if Jean-Luc/Ginny (post #13 above) etc. are a "breed" or perhaps they can subtly adjust their appearance and Teleport?

My saga with Max is chronicled starting at #43

http://www.librarything.com/topic/13610&...

Your, possibly a host to an alien life form,

Guido.

PS. Don't like photo hosting sites, will have to work out some other way of posting a
picture to talk.

lis 5, 2009, 6:59pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 80: amysisson

Hi Guido! I just saw your message! I'm going to come back and read your Max saga soon but am off to a hockey game at the moment (Houston Aeros vs. Manitoba Moose -- we live in Houston, but my husband is from Manitoba, so it could get ugly!)

But to answer your Q quickly, I think Jean-Luc is likely to be half-Ragamuffin. I compared him to pictures in a cat breed encyclopedia and that's very close. I'd been calling him a Ragdoll, but Ragamuffin looks closer.

Back soon.... >^..^

lis 5, 2009, 6:59pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 81: amysisson

Whoops, my kitties whiskers above got cut off. Let's try that again: >^..^

lis 6, 2009, 2:58am (nahoru)Zpráva č. 82: guido47

Dear Amysisson and others,

I thought you were joking when you called the breed a Ragamuffin, but then I Googled
and lo there was a sort of Max. Max's tail is not as fluffy and he has yellow/green eyes and I have not checked him for "flop in arms" but the rest is spot on.

Thanks, in future if anyone asks I will say, snobish voice ON, "...Oh he is a Ragamuffin"

I still think is sounds like something out of Dickens :-)

Guido.

PS. My friends 19/20 yo. cat is dying and rake thin but now I know what to look for, he must also be a half Ragamuffin.
That would make him born in say 1989/90.
Does anyone know when Ragamuffins came to Aussi?

I don't have cats, but I visited an out-of-state friend who does. One of her cats, well...

But generally what was interesting was how they "curled up"

That last one was learned from said friend, by the way.

That's only two cats (who live with one person). They just have a variety of interesting ways of sleeping.

lis 9, 2009, 5:57pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 95: amysisson

Max IS handsome! Classic tuxedo markings, but gray instead of black....

We were getting a cold spell (well, what PASSES for a cold spell in Houston) and have had six on the bed upon waking. But now we're back to only two or three. If we get a REALLY cold night we'll get all seven, and I wake up very stiff from not being able to toss and turn the way I normally do!

lis 10, 2009, 4:18pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 96: Catgwinn

#95...Yes, heaven forbid if you move & disturb the cat(s)=^..^=

lis 10, 2009, 6:39pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 97: pollysmith

Oh yes the cats cannot be disturbed!

lis 10, 2009, 7:58pm (nahoru)Zpráva č. 98: skittles

Never ever disturb the kitties!!

lis 11, 2009, 8:25am (nahoru)Zpráva č. 99: karenmarie

My daughter and husband are always telling me how mean I am - just as a kitty gets settled in my lap, I have to get up to cook or do laundry or something else around the house.

I disturb the kitties. They still love me. Especially if I get near the kitchen, because that means feeding time at the zoo.

My husband got a bee in his bonnet Sunday. I accidentally broke the fish tank heater and we had to get one right away. So we went to the Pet Smart. It takes 45 minutes to get there, and that's the closest pet store open on Sunday. We were walking around, and he decided we had to have a kitty tower - the place they can sleep and scratch and watch things from. It's got 3 platforms - 2 are curved, and one is a tube with one side entrance. So now they're all getting used to it. We put it next to the fish tank so that Inara can watch Fish TV more conveniently from the top, although Kitty William has been up there the most so far. Coco has taken to sleeping on the bottom with her back to the post. Magic has taken the bottom platform and Merlin, the scaredy cat, has taken over the tube. I think she feels safer in there. They're funny to watch.
