15. Modern Magic by Anne Cordwainer
An intriguing story set in modern times with sorcerers living amongst ordinary people and yet dealing with their own sort of problems. The main characters are the siblings John, a highly gifted magician, and Liz, who doesn't have any magical talent at all, and they regularly exchange the role as first person narrator. This gives the reader some interesting insights into the dilemma that can arise when two world views and the truths they take for granted clash. The book is split into different episodes, which are often set months or up to a year apart, which allows us to see how John and Liz react to the changing world around them and how they try to deal with the different crises that always seem to spring up where they are. Interesting till the last page and well worth a read if you want to discover an alternative to Harry Potter's magical world.

Elsewhere by William Peter Blatty
A haunted house story with a twist. Trying to sell a famously haunted house real-estate agent Joan Freeboard assembles a team of spiritual experts to spend a week in the house and prove that there are no ghosts. However, the idyllic place does have a gruesome past and they soon start seeing signs that not everything is as it seems. An intriguing story which has many interesting twists and turning points.

26.
Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions (Dover Thrift Editions) by Edwin A. Abbott
A fascinating allegory on Victorian society told with two and three dimensional geographical figures. Even though written in the late 19th century, aspects of the story about people's sometimes limited world views are still relevant today and the moralities of the book shouldn't be lightly dismissed. At only 80 pages it is a quick read which you shouldn't miss.

The Graveyard Book by
Neil GaimanA small baby barely escapes a murder attempt and finds himself in a Graveyard whose inhabitants (ghosts and a vampire) promptly adopt him and promise to keep him safe. However, the danger still lurks outside and so he grows up isolated from the modern world, facing challenges a normal boy could never even dream of...
The Graveyard Book is a terrific novel full of wonder and adventure. As usual Neil Gaiman's gripping story telling appeals to all ages and Dave McKean's artful black and white illustrations give the story more dimensions than you normally see on paper. A must read!

29. Midnight Grinding & Other Twilight Terrors by
Ronald KellyMidnight Grinding collects short stories set in the Southern States of the US. The stories are quite short, but still offer enough background to make for an intriguing reading. In addition, every story illuminates a different kind of evil or horror and thus the book never got boring. Aficionados of horror and shorter stories should give this collection a go.

Torpedo Juice by Tim Dorsey (Audio)
Torpedo Juice is a strange book. In parts laugh out loud funny, for example the opening scene where the Narrator is fired, and in parts with an unbelievably convoluted plot. You definitely never know where the story is taking you next. Overall an intriguing book you should give a try if in desperate search for some lightweight humor.

Mr. Punch by
Neil GaimanA story of remembrance. As a man looks back on his boyhood and the encounters he had with the Mister Punch and Judy shows, he discovers that some secrets better remain undiscovered. A graphic novel lavishly and ingeniously illustrated by Dave McKean and fluidly and intriguingly told by Neil Gaiman. A worthy addition to any library.

Fables Vol. 10: The Good Prince by
Bill WillinghamThe Good Prince is the tenth installment of Fables, a graphic novel series about characters from various fables which had been exiled from their Homelands by an evil emperor and have found a refuge in modern day New York. Unfortunately, they cannot spend their days in peace as the enemy threatens a total war to annihilate the colony. The stories are full of adventure, humor and strangely believable story lines. In this issue the tale of Prince Ambrose, or as all Fables know him Flycatcher the Janitor, is recounted and how he has to face many perils to finally avenge his family. This book is one of the best so far and an absolute joy to read with an epic story, romance and many surprises. I can highly recommend Fables and The Good Prince to anyone interested in graphic novels and modern fairy tales.

72. Romance and reality of the Puritan coast; with many little picturings authentic by
Edmund Henry GarrettAn old piece of travel literature written before the start of the twentieth century. The author writes about his excursions with a bicycle along the puritan coast, starting from Boston. The book is wonderfully illustrated with very detailed drawings. It is very intriguing to see which things stayed the same (Salem already had a lot of antique shops back then) and learn about some of the old legends.

Night Cage by
Andrew Harper (Cemetary Dance Book Club 2008)
After a rather slow start this creepy thriller becomes a real page-turner towards the end. The book masterfully entwines one into the inner workings of an old asylum for the criminally insane and what can go wrong if a patient is released into the world too early.

Die große Erzferkelprophezeiung. Nimmerzwerg by
